| This is an older post but someone might read this.... I have two friends in the midwest that shoot this custom load for their 243's at coyotes and are successful.... and have for the last 35+ years... go to the store that sells ammo and buy (off the shelf) 85 grain spire points.... go shoot.... at this point in time coyote pelts aren't worth the work and time to save..... even put up on stretchers with care..... sewing up coyotes isn't a real big thing if you know one little secret..... |

Will confirm on .243 Win/ 95 grain Ballistic Tip on coyotes, last one I hit at 70 yards left a three inch plus diameter hole on the exit side.
I only keep furs for decorating the hunting shack. The bigger the hole, the bigger the story.
The last Coyote hit with a 120 grain Ballistic Tip from a 7mm STW with 3,600 fps MV at 50 yards left a four inch plus exit hole. Skinned that one too and hung it up on a fence post. I do get asked "what the Hell did you shot that with" every now and then.
I smile before giving the answer. |

| Well i don't know about you guys but I would sling the 243 over my back and break out the traps and snow shoes. Traps never get hungry, never get tired, hunt 24/7, and you can set a whole lot of them. As for a 243 load i would say use a light fast frangible or a FMJ like some of the other guys mentioned. I wonder how those Barnes varmint grenades would be? How far are you planning on shooting? |

the theory of setting a bunch of traps is marvelous.... i did it for 50 plus years.... they have to be checked.... depending on the state sometimes everyday..... with the weather change the trap may be uncovered by rain, wind and can be covered with a foot or more of snow, frozen down by cold weather and of course stepped on and sprung by livestock or everything under the sun.... so they have to be checked and reset frequently sometimes.... and when you have to pack back in a dozen or 18.... that is a load...then there is the two legged predetor that will steal you furs and traps.... even snares take equipment to set them and have to be checked..... the one redeeming thing about trapping is "it is christmas everyday" alas it was too hard on my knees so i sold about all my traps about 2 years ago.. 350 of them ... i still have a couple of doz. and help some of my neighbors with predetors... |

I know this is an older thread, but I'll put my bit in.
I shoot quite a few yotes with my 243 and 58gr vmax. If the shoulder or hips are hit, you get a big hole. If its a frontal shot or behind the shoulder, no exit and you can't even see where the hit is. Just a bang flop.
That's my favorite yote bullet for the 243. |

With what rifle? Also, what is your loading and have you played with the OAL any? My 55 gr load uses a 2.550" OAL and my 75 gr load uses a 2.690" OAL. The rifle these are being shot from is a Weatherby Vanguard Youth Synthetic, which has the same twist and barrel length yours does. |
