i wanted to start a thread to give an idea to future shooters what level of fps and energy required to pierce different thicknesses and types of steel targets and different ranges

i just shot holes through a 50$ AR500 plate thinking it was impenetrable

It would be a great to know at what distance to safely shoot at a steel target without piercing through it ahead of time

if you have ever pierced a steel target of any type please post your findings

Im hoping this thread picks up and gets a few reply's so to kind of keep it organized, you can copy and paste this into your reply's

heres a link to an energy calculator

Dusty,

JMHO, but allowing the target to swing makes a difference in whether a round penetrates. I usually set mine up at 300 yards and barely get impact craters with most high powered hunting calibers. I have lost one of the tow straps from spalling...melted the nylon clear through. If I make sure the connection is on the back it does better. The deepest craters I get are from little (32 gr) .204 Ruger rounds, although they're going ~ 3950 fps at the muzzle, so speed has a lot to do with result.

I have some 3-way brackets that I use with rebar. Very portable since it all breaks down. Here's how I hang mine...

you did not mention the range ,caliber or est MV/bullet weight.
My club shoots exclusively at AR500 from 100-1,000 yards. No military FMJ (lead core) at any range has ever pierced AR500 steel 1/2" thick.
Many of the targets have been struck thousands of time and are only pock-marked.
I would suspect you have been sold AR400 or other lesser steel plate.

Off topic but worth a mention.

My club gets old fire hose from the local engine house to hang steel. The hose is very durable. With 1,000 club members shooting the dingers, they replace the hose about every other month.

Pierced ? Yes/No: YES
Material Type: Steel (mild ?)
Material Thickness: 0.5"
Target Supported or hanging: Hanging
Cartridge Used: 300 Win.Mag.
Reloads/Factory: Reloads
projectile Make: Hornady
Projectile Type: A-max
Projectile weight: 178gr
Projectile Comments:
Target Distance: 328 yards (300meters)
Velocity @ Target: 2,445 fps
Energy @ target: 2,365 ft-lbs.

Overall Comments: End of range day I had 2 cartridges left so I shot them fast at a 300meter gong.
This is a mild load for mid-range. 3,030 fps at the muzzle (26"bbl)

Reached around the gong and stuck my pinkie in the hole for the pic
I think it was the second shot that made the hole, but not 100% sure since I shot them as fast as possible with out sacrificing too much accuracy.

If you got holes shooting the '06 at 225 yards through your plate you got ripped off.It is not AR500.

We have some AR-500 (3/8" I think) gongs at the range now and nothing makes a dent in them. They're at 328 yards.

There are a couple small ones at the 100 yard range but I have not seen them since I never shoot at the 100 range. Why would I, when the 300 meter (328 yard) range also has 200 and 100m berms.
