Besides using plug screws, is there a way to plug the holes on a barrel after removing the iron sights? Can some type of a putty filler either permanent or not, be used? If so, which one?

Devcon makes both steel epoxy and putty you can use. You'll get way more than you'll need for a project like this, though, so $$ will be much higher than a plug screw.

I think I will use plug screws. But, what size do I order. The rifle is a Remington model 788. Does anyone know the thread size?

If you don't have the screws that came out with the iron sites to measure thread/pitch, give Remington a call. You should have the Ser. # ready, but they'll be able to give you the best info based on manufacture date/history.

Brownells might be another option for a phone call, but my first implulse would be to call Remington.

Black glue gun stick can be flamed smooth and is not permanent.

7x57guy,

Most any GS should have plug screws - If you can't get'em from the manuf. I'd try one that's in your area.

I think the gunsmith idea is probably what I will do. They are expensive to order. An old gunsmith probably won't charge much if any.

I have a small gunshop, but don't have a 788 in stock to check but if I'm not mistaken, it takes 6-48 plugs and I should have some blued ones I would be happy to mail you if you want to send me a PM with your address. If they don't fit, you can simply stick them back in an envelope and send back. Just costs a stamp to try.

Yep, 6x48 and they have gotten expensive too. I went to buy a new supply at Brownell's and about had a big one.

I bought an assortment (Pachmeyer brand) of screws and plugs from Cabela's. Of course it seems like all of one thing get used up, it's a gamble finding something to fit. I'm working on a curmudgon collection of essential stuff and tools.

I filled the holes on my rem bbl with clear silicone, it layed down flat and smooth and stayed in place for 20 yrs. recently removed the silicone easily and put plug screws in. now they are not flat and smooth, shoulda left them alone. am thinking of putting silicone back in. black silicone would probly blend better. or just use whatever you already have in the garage for free.

I think the receiver scope filler screws for a Marlin 336 are the same thread . Brownells has them for $3.00 or so .

6-48 on barrel or action of the Remingtons and that size is standardized on almost all factory rifles.

Actually, the 6-48 screws were a little small for the Remington 788, but they worked w/ a drop of locktite, so I used them. They won't come out and no one can tell the difference.
