Stick with the CCI-250 Mag primer and get a bottle of Alliant Reloder 25. Save the other powders for a 22-250 Rem.
I use 70.0 grains of RL-25 with Rem cases and Nosler 160 grain Accubonds at around 3,050 fps.

| I just tried a load a couple weeks ago but with a 140 gr. Barnes Tipped Triple Shok with 69.0 grs. of RL22, Fed case and Fed 215 mag primer the ave. 3293 fps. and another with everything the same except 70.5 grs. of WMR. didn't measure with a caliper but both shot a 3/8 in grp. . Bobo is correct. H380 and varget too fast for large cases. The last time I shot a 160 gr. bullet in my 7 mag I was using 61.0 grs. of IMR 4350. There's a lot of better powders fo the 7 mag now days. IMR 7828, RL25, RL22,IMR4381 and H4831 I've used but so far RL22 has worked best for my rifle. I'm gpong to try you load BoBo ! |

| You actually loose speed with powders slower than about r-22 in a 7 mag with only 160 gr bullets. |

In my Browning SS A-Bolt with a 26" barrel I can get 3,210 fps with a 160 grain Speer Trophy Bond and a healthy dose of RL-25 with out trashing my brass. This is a bullet with a solid copper shank and no relief bands and a 10% tear drop of lead in the front end. To get this velocity with H4831 or RL-22 it will be at a higher pressure that your brass will endure.
RL-22 can do this with a plain jane Speer 160 grain Hot Core due to higher % of lead content.
I have gotten 3,040 fps with a 175 grain Nosler Partition and a healthy dose of H870 with no pressure signs. At this velocity and H4831 I would not bother bending over to pick up the brass.
There is a reason these newer powders have evolved. Same speed with lower pressures.

I cant get a bottle of RL25 Instead I buy RL22, and go to try this recipe; 160gr SBT Sierra GK / 65gr RL22 / CCI250 / R-P Brass and 0.010 to the lands. Later post the results |

| I ran some data on QL and this is what it gave me for a Rem 700 with 26" bbl in 7mm Mag. 62.9 gr RL22 min. for 2870 fps to 68.4 gr RL22 for 3109 fps. with a COL of 3.290". Hope this helps as the program doesn't allow for primers to be changed out yet for more specific data. |

Confirmation on Hockeynick39's QL work:
Going through my old reloading notes 68.0 grains of RL-22 with a 154 grain Hornady Spire Point loaded to 3.29" gave me 3,130 fps using a Rem case with CCI-250 mag primers.
Just for reference, the Federal Premium 160 grain Barnes XLC factory load clocks at 3,050 fps out of my Browning A-Bolt.
Have fun.

At least, the results for this recipe: 160gr SBT Sierra GK / 65gr RL22 / CCI250 / R-P Brass and 0.010 to the lands. A litle bit of kick and recoil, but a good .750" 3 shots group 100mts, the rifle is a Rem700, 24" bbl with no modifications, only devcon bedding. Thanks |

I have a Tikka T3 Lite 7mmRem mag 241/4 inch barrel. I use 67gr of RL22 162 A-Max with CCI250 mag primers. I get 2950fps AV and that shoots constant .3inch groups at 100m. And still well under an inch at 300m. 67gr of RL22 is 2 grains over book max. I have ladder tested up to 68gr and that gave me 3100fps. No signs of pressure, primers ok and case expansion was less than some of the Federal factory loads I had. The 162 A-Max is a great killer on Red deer and smaller deer. Contrary to what it says on the box or what others may say. In New Zealand where I live I personally know of 3 people that have used 162A-Max for the last 10 years and not lost an animal. (they are also very good shots) I hope this helps. |
